Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s First Wedding

Hollywood is filled with famous weddings, and the followers of movie stars and celebrities love reading about their romances. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were married twice, the first time in 1964. Read about their romance and their wedding day below.

The Start of Their Romance

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton met on the set of the film Cleopatra in Rome in 1962. Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra and Richard Burton as Mark Antony were the stars of the movie. While filming, the two developed an almost instant connection. The script called for an on-set kiss, and this kiss is said to have gone on far longer than production required.

Shortly after meeting, the two started dating, and the paparazzi covered their relationship from every angle. When Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were done filming Cleopatra, they were already planning on getting married to the surprise of their Hollywood friends.

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s Wedding Day

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were married March 15th, 1964 in Montreal. Foregoing a traditional wedding dress (as this was her fifth marriage), Liz wore a yellow baby doll dress that was designed and created by Cleopatra costume designer Irene Sharaff. Her wedding day look was complete with hyacinths and lilies of the valley cascading through her braided updo. A diamond and emerald Bulgari brooch, which Burton proposed with, completed Elizabeth Taylor’s ensemble.

Richard Burton wore a dark suit, with a dark tie and matching pocket square, and a dress matching yellow boutonniere in his jacket. The coordinated looks and the personal touches made the day.
