Pros and Cons of an Formal or Semi-Formal Wedding
Pro: A More Traditional Gathering
Formal or semi-formal weddings are ones that are classically traditional. Brides and grooms like them because they have pomp and circumstance and all the details with a traditional dress code. These weddings can be big or small, so guest count doesn’t come into play here. Likewise, location, whether local or a destination wedding, will work for formal or semi-formal affairs. Highlighting your personal style can be your selection of menu, dinnerware, and decor.
Con: Budget
Budget is the biggest con for having a formal or semi-formal wedding. A formal wedding includes extra costs such as expensive linens, flowers, centerpieces, and table settings for every guest. Venue cost comes into play because a formal venue may cost more per guest than a more informal venue. If you have a formal wedding outside, there’s also the added cost of tents (this may also be a cost factor for informal weddings as well).
Pros and Cons of an Informal or Casual Wedding
Pro: Cost
If cost is a con for a formal or semi-formal wedding then it may be a pro for a causal wedding. In general, things will be less expensive. This may include venue costs, menu, and decorations. Many times at a casual/informal wedding, the bride and grooms families will provide some of the food and sometimes decorations as well.
Con: Dress Code
The biggest drawback (potentially, as this sometimes depends on the feelings of the guests) is having a more casual dress code. When attending a wedding, some guests have an expectation/desire of getting dressed up to celebrate. Some will do that while some will not. So expect a wide variety of outfits/attire at your ceremony and reception. Even at an informal wedding you can specify “casual chic” on your invitation to keep that odd guest from showing up in shorts.
