4 Minimalist Wedding Tips

When we think about weddings, we often think of the grand and extravagant events. Some weddings are much more than one-day events, and may even be full destination vacations. But this is not the only option for wedding days. Many couples today are embracing the minimalist wedding trend. If that’s more your speed, here’s what you need to know about a minimalist wedding.

What Is a Minimalist Wedding?

A minimalist wedding is one with an emphasis on simplicity over extravagance. Minimalist weddings focus more on the core of the wedding, such as the ceremony, food, and celebrating the couple while eliminating the excess. It’s less about removing things but being intentional with the choices you make. These types of weddings also may have fewer guests, and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Here are a few things to keep in mind for a minimalist wedding:

#1 – Bring Your Own Alcohol

An open bar can both take away from the intention of having a minimalist wedding, and it can drive up the venue cost. Look for a venue which will allow you to bring your own alcohol, or at least some of your own alcohol. Not only will this help you save money, but you’ll be supporting local businesses. Bringing your own alcohol is also a way to pair down the cost as you will only pay for what you supply.

#2 – Ask Yourself “Is This Really What We Want?”

A minimalist wedding is about asking what you want, and what will be meaningful for you. In the chaos of wedding planning, it can be easy to just say yes to something without thinking if it speaks to you, or if you want to have it included in your wedding (especially those suggestions from parents and future in-laws). Look at the traditional wedding items, such as food, decor, and entertainment and find what you want to include. Remember that even if you have a wedding planner for your minimalist wedding, you can always say no to their suggestions.

#3 – Keep Your Color Palette in Mind

Minimalist weddings are more about the overall picture than the smaller details. To color your overall picture use a natural or neutral pallet as those colors go well together.  You can mix and match colors depending on your tastes and can also tie your wedding to the season.

Start with a natural, pale shade such as green, brown, or blue, and then consider adding a bolder color to the mix, such as navy blue, or emerald green. For an even lighter color pallet, consider using mint, lemon, or lilac. Whatever color pallet you chose, make sure you use the same colors throughout the wedding and reception.

#4 – Have A Simple Menu

Minimalist doesn’t mean you can’t have the dinner you want, just consider limiting the menu to a smaller selection as opposed to a big buffet or sit-down dinner. Have one meat and vegetarian option for the main dish with two or three sides, one which can be salad. Only have one dessert option in addition to your wedding cake. For wine options (which may work along with bringing your own alcohol), select one red and one white option along with water and a soft drink option.
