5 Wedding Dress Styles for the Hourglass Shape

Finding a wedding dress that suits your body type can be a challenge. With so many differing styles, then how do you select a style that is best for your body type? Here are five wedding dress styles for brides with an hourglass shape (generally meaning your hips and bust are nearly equal in size and you have a well-defined waist that’s narrower than both).

The Ball Gown

The bodice of this style is fitted, but the skirt is full and starts right below the waist. The lower portion of the dress can be tulle layers, and these can be decorated or accessorized with a variety of things like lace or beading. A corset may be added to the top of the dress, making it easy to adjust to your shape. We can tailor this style, making it great for tall or short brides.

A-Line

This style is classic and looks great on brides with an hourglass figure. The top of the dress has a fitted bodice, with a skirt extending from the bodice to the floor. This style allows the option for a stunning train. The bride may add all kinds of embellishments, such as embroidery or lace.

Mermaid

This style shapes the body from the chest to the knee and then flares from the knee downward. Mermaid style dresses emphasize the waist and the hips. A bride will have to keep in mind that she needs to wear the correct undergarments because this style is more fitted, providing a flattering silhouette while also allowing freedom of movement.

Column

This style features a somewhat snug fit but is lighter and more seamless. They give this style structure using fabrics such as taffeta, brocade, or corded lace. A column style can definitely accentuate an hourglass (or athletic) shape.

Tea-Length

This is a style which can be a mixture of classic and modern. While shorter than a traditional wedding dress, this dress is perfect for an intimate or a brunch wedding. Seen as middle ground between fashion forward and a classic style, this is a great option for a bride of hourglass shape to enhance a vintage appeal.

As with every wedding dress style, make sure you research and try on these various styles to make sure they work for you. Still need help to find the perfect wedding dress for your body type? Check out our shop and blog for more info.
