Pros and Cons: Buffet vs. Sit Down For Your Wedding Reception

The type of reception meal is a conversation couples should have when they begin planning their reception. There are benefits and things to consider for each type of reception meal. Here are some pros and cons of buffet vs sit-down.

Buffet – Less Expensive (Pro)

When planning a wedding, everyone is looking for a way to save money and be more cost effective. Having a buffet can be less expensive because usually the food can be purchased and prepared for less. Foods like salads, chicken, and soups can be made to your liking, and if you use local/seasonal ingredients, you can save money that way. A dessert buffet is another option, and you can feature a variety of different flavors.

Buffet – Staggered Service (Con)

While a buffet can be more cost effective, it means not everyone can eat at the same time as everyone must pass through the buffet line. If the line moves slowly then it’s possible the first table will be done before the last table is even served. If you are considering a buffet for a larger wedding, then talk with the venue about having multiple serving lines.

Buffet – No Need For Guest Selections (Pro)

One advantage to a buffet is you don’t need a main course selection from your guests before the reception (like how many beef, how many chicken, how many fish, etc). You can work with the caterer to create a selection of main courses for your guests using their experience in determining quantities.  If unfortunately, you should run out of one main course offering, guests generally will select an alternate freely.

Sit-Down – No Extra Tables to Set Up (Pro)

If you’re looking for a way to minimize your food serving space, have a sit-down dinner. This will give you more  usable space in your room as you don’t have the extra tables you would usually have with a buffet. Also, there’s less set-up and take down at the end of the night. This option is perfect for couples with limited space for the reception.

Sit-Down – More Expensive (Con)

A sit-down meal will be more formal, which may also come with a higher price tag. Food selection, the number of servers needed, and kitchen capacity are all factors into the cost of a sit-down meal.

Sit-Down – Less Food Waste (Pro)

If you’re looking for a way to be more sustainable at your reception, consider a sit-down. A plated dinner meal will have the caterer only prepare enough food for each reception guest (with some planned extra).

With a buffet the caterer will prepare some extras for each item as there was no preselection from your guests. However, some caterers and venues work with local shelters to donate extra uneaten food to them. If you’re planning a buffet check with the caterer to see if this option is available.
