Wedding themes are personal to the engaged couple and can be an extension of their hobbies, interests, and lifestyle. Gothic- themed weddings are becoming a big trend as gothic romances become popular again. Here are tips for planning your gothic themed wedding.
What Is A Gothic Wedding Theme?
A Gothic wedding theme is one that doesn’t generally embrace the traditional wedding color of the bride wearing white. Gothic weddings can embrace the darker side of romance, and feature deep reds, blues, and black along with lace accessories. Venues with history or an air of mystery are traditional locations for a gothic wedding.
Tips for Planning A Gothic Wedding

Consider You and Your Bridesmaid’s Wardrobe
A gothic themed wedding calls for a dress that is darker in tone. Black, grey, or deep red are a great place to start when looking for your gothic wedding dress. Pair your dress with black combat boots, and dark hair accessories to complete the look. For your bridesmaids, look for dark colors to complete the gothic wedding theme.
Have Gothic Themed Menus and Dessert
Menu style can vary from couple to couple, but black and gold or black and red table dressings are a great way to feature colors associated with gothic themes. Cocktails are another fun way to feature a gothic theme by taking a traditional cocktail and changing the name to something gothic themed.
However, a gothic themed wedding doesn’t need to be all black or dark colors. Dark decoration on a white cake can be a nice contrast; use silver or gold plating for a nice effect.
Use Non-Traditional Flowers
Most traditional flowers you find for weddings may not fit the gothic wedding theme. But there are some varieties that you can incorporate into your wedding. Black roses, black calla lilies, dark red roses, thistles, and other seasonal darker blooms can work. Ask a florist for help finding dark seasonal flowers that would work well for your bouquets and tablescapes. Use fresh and dried floral and foliage. Another direction is to use one bright flower mixed with dark ones.
Use Dim Lighting, Music, and Unique Entertainment
Gothic is all about the mood, and lighting, music, and unique entertainment will make you and the guests feel the gothic atmosphere. Chandeliers are a great way to create gothic themed lighting because they can throw interesting shadows around the venue. Also spreading electric candles around the venue can also add to the mood.
Colored gels (like those used in theatre productions) are also a great way to add splashes of non-traditional colors. Select music from your favorite gothic artists for the DJ or book a live band with gothic sets. Fortune tellers and tarot card readers are a great way to add a unique gothic element to your wedding.
