Do you want an open bar for your wedding? Open bars can be appealing, but might not be for every wedding. In this blog, we’ll break down some of the pros and cons of having an open bar for your wedding.
Pro: Encourages More Socializing
When you have an open bar, the bar area generally gives your guests an area to socialize. While reception tables are usually pre-planned, the bar area can be a place where guests can talk and catch up with those not seated at their table. The bar area is a great place for your new family to get to know each other.
Con: Higher Cost
Having a full open bar is not the most cost-effective solution out there. Paying for all kinds of alcohol is going to be expensive for you. Serving the wide selection of mixed drinks and cocktails will be high cost due to the number of different liquors required.
There are a couple of ways to reduce your costs. Limiting your bar to beer and wine will reduce your expenditures; having a signature cocktail can add an additional selection. Alternatively, you may offer a cash bar for mixed drinks and cocktails.
Pro: A Variety of Drinks
When it comes to weddings, you have a lot of things to decide. Having a full open bar can eliminate one decision quickly. However, if budget is a consideration, then the easy decision to offer a limited bar with beer and wine. Regardless of which bar option you pick, be sure to include a selection of soft drinks and juices for those that don’t consume alcohol.
Con: Guests Might take Advantage
Unfortunately, some of your guests may take advantage of your open bar. In addition to consuming too much they may also impact the celebration of your wedding. This is where a good bartender comes in. Have a discussion with your bartender(s) during your venue meetings and advise them to immediately stop serving anyone they feel has over indulged.
Pro: A Happy Medium
Having a full open bar allows your guests to order their drink of choice. Likewise, even with a limited open bar your guests can usually find an alcoholic beverage of their choice. Having a signature cocktail is also a way to allow everyone to enjoy the celebration, particularly if they are part of the bride and groom toasts. And lastly, while not a strong consideration having your guests only having to tip the bartender will make them happy.
