Dress codes for weddings can sometimes be confusing to follow. There are casual, cocktail, formal, black tie, and white tie dress codes. As a guest, you want to make sure you’re dressed appropriately. Here are the wedding dress codes explained.
White Tie
White tie is the most formal wedding dress code. Today, this term is not used as often and is usually reserved for royal weddings or very formal affairs. Women are required to wear a full-length dress, in A-line or sheath style, but you may wear a ball gown depending on the venue. Men need a dark tuxedo jacket with tails, a white button-down dress shirt and white vest with a bowtie and cummerbund. Tuxedo slacks are also required. Women can accessorize with glittering jewelry with sleek heels and gloves depending on the venue.
Black Tie
When an invitation calls for black tie, it means the dress code is less strict than white tie but still formal. A black-tie wedding means evening, and the reception will likely start at 5:30 or 6:00PM. Women should wear a full-length gown in a high-quality fabric such as satin or velvet. Men are required to wear a tuxedo, not a suit or suit separates. The difference for men is you don’t have to wear tails; a cummerbund optional. Black tie optional has the option of a dark suit for men as opposed to a full tuxedo. Women can wear a cocktail dress or a skirt and blouse as opposed to a full evening gown. The idea is to look polished while still having the freedom to express your personal style.
Formal
Formal is a popular dress code because you can dress fashionably. The guidelines are not as strict as white or black tie. A nicer cocktail dress, elegant dress, or a pants suit are the dress code for women. Men are not required to wear a full tuxedo, however a jacket and tie or traditional suit is appropriate. A colorful tie or bold accessories are a great way to show your personal style.
Cocktail
A cocktail dress code (sometimes called semi-formal) falls below the formal dress code. A cocktail dress with a shorter hemline is appropriate for women, including shorter gowns such as midi or tea length gowns. Dresses for a cocktail wedding should not go above the knee. Men can’t go wrong with a suit with crisp black or white shirt or a paired sport coat and slacks. Have fun with accessories and jewelry and shoes to show your personality.
Casual
A casual wedding is a relaxed and still put together look. The important thing to remember about a casual dress code is that a wedding is still a polished affair. Lighter fabrics such as linen or cotton work. Maxi’s, midis or a skirt and a nice top will work well. For shoes, wear flats or simple sandals that are easy to walk in. Men can wear chinos or linen pants and a short-sleeved shirt. Add a blazer and a pocket square for a more complete look.
