5 Tips For Winter Weddings

Whether locally as part of a destination wedding, winter weddings are becoming more popular. This comes despite — or possibly because of — winter weddings traditionally being in the “off season.” This allows couples to have more scheduling availability and possibly save money.  No matter where you’re getting married, here are a few standard tips for winter weddings.

#1 – Have a Backup Plan

Between snow, rain, and temperatures, it’s difficult to predict what the weather will do on the day of your wedding. If you’re including an outdoor setting as part of your wedding, make sure the indoor venue can provide all the wedding functions.  This way if the weather shifts, you’re able to still have your wedding safely indoors.  Be sure to tell your out-of-town guests to factor the weather into their travel plans.

#2 – Pick A Venue That Matches the Season

When looking at wedding venues, there are some that may not be ideal for a winter wedding considering the wedding location. For example, a beach wedding in the winter in the northeast isn’t ideal. However, a beach wedding in Florida might be.

Spend some time exploring different venues and try to find the ones that will match the cozy vibes of your location. Find venues with extra amenities such as fireplaces or fire pits to add a winter ambience. Also look for venues with rich colors to embrace the colors of the season.

#3 – Look Beyond the Traditional Holiday Colors for Your Wedding Color Scheme

While everyone associates a winter wedding with red and green, or blue and silver, there are different shades of these colors which can be perfect for your winter wedding. Look into colors like berry red, burgundy, along with black and gold. Add an extra touch with natural greenery. Look to blend warm tones and cool tones in the same color family.

#4 – Plan a Menu Featuring the Flavors of the Season

Just because you’re getting married in the winter doesn’t mean your menu can’t sparkle along with the season.  During this time of year, a hearty soup with seasonal vegetables and a starch like potatoes or noodles is the perfect appetizer. Main dishes featuring meat such as steak, lamb, or chicken and a root vegetable side is a fine choice for this time of year.

Traditional winter pies paired with a coffee and tea bar and your traditional wedding cake are the perfect way to end your wedding meal. Pair full bodied red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Malbec, or a spiced cocktail  with your menu.

#5 – Keep Guests Comfort in Mind

If you’re having a reception at a different venue from your ceremony, keep in mind that your guests will need to travel between locations possibly in inclement weather.  Having hot drinks is a great way to welcome your guests to your reception. Again, warming fireplaces are a great way for your guests to take their chill off.
