While we design gowns for the bride, we can’t forget about styles for the groom. There are a number of jacket styles that grooms can explore, not to mention tuxedo accessories: tuxedo shirt, cuffs, tie, cummerbund or vest, suspenders and more. Not sure where to start? Here are a few tuxedo jacket styles for grooms:
Notch Lapel Tuxedo Jacket
This has been a classic tuxedo lapel style for a long time. The lapels of the tuxedo coat will have folded flaps, framing your neck and chest. The small cut out near the neck gives this style the name notch lapel. This style lapel can be found on both single- and double-breasted jackets. Traditionally, a bow tie and formal shoes complete the look. Velvet or patterned lapels is an option for this style.
Single Breasted Tuxedo Jacket
When looking at tuxedo jackets, this is a popular option. A single-breasted jacket can be less formal and is a classic style. On the groom a single-breasted jacket will have one column of buttons and will have no overlapping of the body fabric. Typically, they will have a front closure secured by one button. Wear this any time of year, and at any type of venue.
Double Breasted Tuxedo Jacket
An option for those that want a more formal look than a single-breasted jacket. The double-breasted jacket will have two columns of buttons and the body fabric will overlap when buttoned. A jacket of this style will have 4-6 buttons with only one being buttoned to finish the look. Grooms getting married at more formal places, such as an estate or historical spot may wear this style of jacket to complement the location.
A Shawl Collar
This is a classic tuxedo collar style known as the style frequented by James Bond in his classic films. The lapel will wrap all the way around the neck with no notches or cutouts. This sleek style is versatile and can be used for any venue or season. For an additional style element, add a double-breasted vest. Shawl colors can be tailored in a variety of fabrics including wool or velvet. This is considered the go-to for black tie weddings. One option is to dress the groom in a shawl collar and the groomsmen in notch collars to add a distinctive touch.
White Tuxedo Jacket
Traditionally, only the bride will wear white at your wedding. However, an emerging trend is for the groom to wear a white jacket for the ceremony. The jacket can have both types of lapel styles, notch or shawl, and can be either single or double breasted. If the groom is purchasing his wedding wear a white jacket can be worn again at any formal affair (likewise, a black tuxedo jacket also has wear options following the wedding formal events as well.)
