Budgeting is something every couple needs to do, and it will be personal for you and your partner. Every couple needs to plan their own budget and talk with each other to make sure the budget is one they are comfortable with. While there are general guidelines, the final budget will depend on the couple’s specific wants. Here are five wedding budget tips.
1) Confirm Who is Paying for the Wedding
While it’s traditional for the bride’s family to pay for the wedding, the couple may offer help. Likewise, the groom’s family may also offer to contribute beyond the traditional rehearsal dinner. Once you have your “funding sources” confirmed, find out how much each of you will pay; that way you can keep track of the budget. You should also confirm if someone wishes their contribution be used for a specific purpose such as florals, food, entertainment, etc.
2) Always Set A Budget Before Shopping
Setting a budget before you start shopping or hiring anyone is important. This helps you see a maximum of what your spending allows. You want to do this early on because you don’t want to get stuck when you find a venue you love and can’t afford it. Also discuss the priorities and where you want the budget to go. Agreeing on where the budget goes because it will help keep expectations in check.
3) See if You can DIY to Save Money
Many couples may not think of using DIY because it isn’t the first thing you think of. Things such as center pieces, florals, or even baking your own wedding cake can be handled by family and friends. This not only adds a personal touch to your wedding, but it’s also a way to save money. Another thing you can easily DIY is your wedding favors which can be another fun way to add your own personal touch.
4) Beware of Hidden Costs
Hidden costs are everywhere, but especially when planning a wedding, you need to make sure you know the cost of everything. Sometimes overlooked costs include: beauty treatments, the bachelorette/bachelor party, hotels the night before if needed, vendor meals, and any overtime costs.
There are many websites that have planning spreadsheets or lists that can help you identify these hidden costs. Trips to the venue, especially if you’re having a destination wedding, include these costs as well.
5) Choose Seasonal Items
If something is in season, it may be cheaper than if it is out of season, particularly fresh / perishable items like flowers, seasonal food items, etc. Include seasonal items where you can to highlight your theme and in the process and potentially save on costs. Some examples include using seasonal fruits in your cocktails, seasonal floral arrangements, and farm-to-table ingredients for your menu.
